Research and Planning - Sinister Trailer analysis

Sinister Trailer

Sinister is a 2012 supernatural horror film directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill and stars and Ethan Hawke. It follows true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt, played by Hawke, as he discovers a box of home movies that puts his family in danger.
The film plot consists of a family that move into a new house which has had a murder within it previous to them moving in. The main character then uses the death as inspiration to the book which he is currently writing. When he goes into the loft, he discovers a box filled with tapes he plays them to discover further that the family that lived in the house prior to them, had been brutally murdered and it had been taped by a man called 'Bogore'. Bogore eats the soul of children who see him in photos. After the main characters children witness the tapes he starts to notice strange things happening within his home. Once he destroys the tapes he notices they reappear every time he tries to destroy them.
The trailer opens with a isolated house at night, fitting the typical conventions of a horror film. The shot breaks up and shots go to black. Their is a voice over in the background, informing the audience of deaths. The next shot involves '9 months later'. We then see the same shot of the house except this time, it is at day not appearing as creepy as the night shot. The new family are gathered round for dinner at the table when there is an exchange of conversation about how the children didnt want to move, and live in the current house. A typical convention of a horror normally includes children who are either involved with the wrongdoing in the film. Or the child(ren) have a sixth sense which the audience become aware of. As the man goes up into the loft the music gets faster creating tension and suspense, then finally the music stops when the scene appears of the box. The audience will gather that this is an important scene as it is left in silence allowing the audience to stop and think about what could be in the box. When the man watches the tapes and discovers the previous family have been hung there is a screeching noise, possibly making the audience jump. A convention of a horror film is definitely its music. The music in a trailer needs to be gripping yet eerie.
A unique selling point for this trailer would be the well known director, Scott Derrickson. Derrickson as well as being a director is a screen writer and producer. His most notable work is as follows: 'The exorcism of Emily Rose' and 'Hellraiser: Inferno'.
