The trailer opens with a voice over of three different radio stations. This is diegetic sound and therefore is informing not only the audience but the characters within the film. The radio station is saying how there has been breaking news in Washington, the news report claims that there has been a 'shocking explosion'. Just as the word shocking is said a building explodes, making the audience engage in the trailer. Whilst the news report is still being played there are several things going on at once. There is text which is appearing giving the audience extra information The trailer is breaking up and cracks, which links with the sound the radio makes when you change the station. Within the first thirty six seconds you see a plane explode, buildings explode, and people running away and screaming. This immediately interests the audience as it hooks them in on a gripping storyline. Constantly throughout the trailer the audience will be trying to figure out what is going on in the trailer, trying to carefully place the information given in relevant possible plots. The costumes of those in the trailer can also confer to the audience that it is an action film, although some are wearing suits, and even though holding a gun, the audience can infer that he is a man of importance and most likely not to be the antagonist. Also in the trailer once the director has come up, other films that Roland Emmerich has directed appear on the screen, with a dramatic sound effect. Which would result in the audience counting how many films that he has directed which have been successful within the industry. This is a unique selling point for 'White House Down'. Where people are a fan of Roland Emmerichs previous work they will expect this film to be just as successful giving it a large fan base to begin with, allowing it to do well within the industry.
