This Is The End
This is the end is a 2013 American apocalyptic horror comedy film. It is directed and written by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg. Evan Goldberg is a film screen writer and producer, however, Seth Rogan is a stand-up comedian, actor, producer, director, screenwriter, and voice artist. It is a unique selling point how talented they are. Knowing how successful Seth Rogan is will entice the audience to go and watch the film. especially as his previous work has too been very successful. Rogan has co produced 'The Forty Year Old Virgin', and has written, 'The Watch' and 'Pineapple Express'. It stars Seth Rogan, James Franco, Jonah Hill, Jay Baruchel, Danny McBride and Craig Robinson, as fictional versions of themselves in the aftermath of a global apocalypse. It is a unique selling point because they have been in other successful films. Cameos from Emma Watson, Rihanna, and Channing Tatum.
Every film needs a situation, however a the typical situation for a comedy horror would be an unexpected situation. And in this trailer we see clips of what the unexpected situation might be. the trailer begins with a party around a party Franco's house in the Hollywood Hills when the apocalypse all of sudden strikes. The main characters barricade themselves inside, in the hope of survival. Outside, there are rivers of fire, Jurassic monsters and 20ft devil waiting to devour them.
Subgenre: comedy/horror/fantasy - The stars of the film all play themselves, and their recent movie offerings demonstrate that they all have sins to atone for. Mixture of 'satire' - mocking celebrities and themselves and their recent filming roles.
The mise en scene are also typical conventions to this genre. The clothing worn by the main characters can infer that they are just normal middle class people. This will help engage the audience as it is objective character identification, the audience will feel like they are similar to the characters. When you cam engage the audience and entice people to watch your films you will create a fan base and the bigger the fan base the more success the film has within the industry. The body language of the characters are relaxed and they is never a tense atmosphere it is kept 'light hearted' which is a typical convention of a comedy. The non-diegetic sound that was used in the trailer consisted of recent typical chart music, creating an up beat feel. The music matches what is happening in the scenes. For example at the very beginning there is a house party, and there is music creating an exciting atmosphere, immediately engaging the audience. However, when the unexpected situation occurs dramatic music comes on, creating a suspense feeling throughout the audience. The change in music is unexpected just like the situation. The lighting in the trailer changes throughout and only becomes dark when they are faced with the apocalypse, however, before it started the lighting for the house party was bright, inferring a comfortable and happy environment.
Different camera angles are used in the trailer so that the audience can suggest characters positions and roles. The audience can infer that Seth is the antagonist because he gets the most prevalence and the first scene on the trailer. There are a lot of medium shots to include more than one person in a shot. This could suggest that they don't have an important role as they aren't the focus of the scene. There are also some high and low angled shots these are specifically for attention to detail. The use of the high angle shot in the trailer is so that the audience can appreciate what the characters are faced with in the film. The low angles were close ups, normally you would expect to see a low angle shot to show vulnerability but not always sometimes, like in this trailer it is to show importance of whatever is that scene. It can suggest to the audience that it will have a big impact later on in the film.
