Research And Planning - Mirrors Poster

The film poster for the 2008 film Mirrors conveys the typical conventions of a horror film. The colour used in this film poster immediately creates an eerie feel and implies that it is a horror. The title 'MIRRORS' is another convention as one of the 'R' is backwards suggesting that like a mirror it is a reflection. The colour of the title is red suggesting, death. the red really stands out from the background engaging the audiences attention. The colour red is the most noticeable colour and therefore stands out from the rest, as the other colours (greys, whites, and blacks) are low key lighting. The mixture between both high and low key lighting act as a contrast grabbing the audiences attention. This then becomes a selling point as the audience, once hooked are engaged in the poster and finding out details about the film. That is why the key information is in white, so that the audience know immediately where they have to look when they want to find out specific information. The main piece of information of the poster is the actor which is directly above the title. It states the main character, which is one of Americas successful actors Kiefer Sutherland. The audience may  recognise him from other films, most notably, 'A Few Good Men' which is an American drama film. 'A Time To Kill' which similarly to 'Mirrors' is a thriller. And 'The Lost Boys' which again is a teen horror. Having Kiefer Sutherland play a starring role in this film is a massive unique selling point because of his previous work.
  The way the boy is sitting in the middle could imply that he is the centre of the film, so that the story line is about him. As a main convention of a horror film are innocent children that stereotypically turn out to be disturbed. The way that the boy is sitting in the water, means that he is reflected like the 'R' in the title. The body language of what appears to be the two main characters makes them look very anxious however dominant as they are standing over the boy. Making it seem as though they are in control of the boy. This could suggest that they are his parents.
