Mirrors is directed by Alexandra Aja it is a supernatural horror, and was released in 2008. The trailer immediately captures the audiences attention because of the actors in the film (Kiefer Sutherland). He is a well known actor and has appeared in other successful films such as 'Phone Booth', 'Monsters vs. Aliens' and 'The Lost Boys' therefore having him in the trailer, the audience can see that a successful actor will be starring in the film, engaging there attention and making them want to see the film. Another unique selling point is who directs the film as the director has also directed the popular and successful film 'The Hills Have Eyes'. Mirrors has a certificate of 15 and therefore its aimed at young adults.
At the beginning of the trailer its starts with a happy looking family (husband, wife and son). Then the mood of the trailer gradually changes when the main protagonist (Kiefer Sutherland) gets a job as a night warden at an abandoned department store. The mood and tension increases when the audience is made aware of broken mirrors and moving reflections within the mirrors. In particular a close up shot focuses on a security guard who see's his own reflection pick up a shard of glass which then he puts up against his neck. This is a typical convention of a horror film as we see both weapons and a disturbed character, which have disrupted the equilibrium. The main protagonist ben (Kiefer Sutherland) try and uncover the disturbing supernatural force behind the mirrors, and protect his own family who appear to be in danger.
Music throughout the trailer is a mixture of non diegetic and diegetic. The diegetic sound that relates to the conventions of a horror are screaming, door slamming, eerie noises coming from the department store. Non diegetic sound that also linked was the soundtrack that was played over the trailer. This gradually built suspense and emphasised the creepy and disturbing events happening in the narrative.
