Research and Planning - Safe Haven Analysis

Safe Haven is a 2013 American romance film starring, Julianne Hough, Josh Duhamel, and Cobie smoulders. Safe Haven was directed by Lasse Hallstrom who is a very successful director within the industry. Most notable films to date include, 'Dear John', 'The Hypnotist' and 'Chocolat'.
The trailer begins with unique selling point to the film. The audience see a girl running away, this doesn't give too much away, especially as we do not know what she is running away from. Because of the first scene it is confusing as to what genre Safe Haven is, it does not look like the stereotypical romance. But that's why I think the film is gripping, its nothing like what has been done before. The use of enigma code makes the trailer build up which hooks the audience before giving away what it is about.
The narrative of the film includes the typical conventions of a romance genre it has a rather peaceful setting with the typical friendly town with kind people. During the trailer we see a flashback of the main character cutting her hair and dying it blonde. This allows the audience to infer that she is making an important decision as if she were running away from something, or someone. This implies that her old life wasn't happy or it was dangerous, which is why she needs to move on. The trailer then cuts to an over the shoulder shot of the woman and the man who have met. It then changes to a close up clip of a man who the women is then going to fall in love with. Following this there is a close up shot of  a man who is looking through the window, he is staring at a woman which infers that something is going to happen between them. The trailer also show the audience the man and the woman meeting in various places where the audience can immediately see that a some sort of relationship will form. The conventions of a romance genre always includes a twist where there is something tragic that will happen which leads up to a 'happy ever after'. Which is a convention of a romance film.
The use of mise en scene in the trailer are also conventions of a romance genre. The use of body language within the trailer suggests emotion and love and a connection between a man and a woman. The clothing of what the characters wear infer to the audience that they are of middle class. No one wears anything that gives the impression of them being of a low class and no one wears any particular clothing to suggest that they are wealthy. The trailer has both light and dark lighting however, the lighting changes at significant moments. When the trailer it is dark inferring that her past secrets is something that she wants to keep hidden. Whereas the scenes that include her new town has very bright lighting which infers her happiness and her peace. The use of sound in the trailer includes both non-diegetic and diegetic sound. There is also a soundtrack that is played over the top of other sounds for example, characters speaking. The voiceover allows the audience to gain information about the film that isn't being shown, whereas the soundtrack is there to match the action of what is happening in the scenes and create an effect.
