Planning: Institution animation



For our trailer we have created our own institution production company. We think that we have produced an effective and conventional logo.  The effects that we used are named 'noise' and 'lightening'. The noise effect creates the static TV background and the lightening helps the effect of making it look dated. It fits within the conventions of a horror genre as the colours used are dark and dull, as the contrast from the colour blue in the lightening creates mystery. Which initially engages the audience intriguing them to want to watch the films create by this certain production company which shall make the film successful within the film industry.





Planning: Institution Logo

To create our institution logo we used fireworks, which helped us to decide what font we wanted to use. The reason for choosing the font style that we did links to the distorted look and actual title we chose 'Distorted Pictures'.
 
 The colour of our text is going to be white which stands out from the background which will be black. We chose these contrasting colours for the text and background as it compliments the dark and mysterious look we want to send across towards the audience and within the trailer. 
 
 




Planning: Film title ideas research

For our film title we have chosen to go for a black background with white writing as it is a well used title effect for a horror genre film. The use of the black background will give the effect of a mystery and darkness. Therefore, the black background shall contrast with the white text which suggests purity and allows it stands out significantly which will allow the audience to remember the film name in order to make the trailer successful.
 
 







 
 Font ideas for our title
 
 
The name of our film is 'Martha'. There is a variety of different types of fonts we could chose from as the titles of horror films tend to be standard and basic and not over the top. We have researched horror genre film fonts and we have found that they use a basic font.
 
These fonts are similar fonts to the ones we want to use for our title font as they aren't complicated and they have a standard basic font which creates the audience not question to reason of having a detailed font and how it relates to the film, whereas, having the basic font makes it more simplistic towards the film.

  • What this costume portrays?
We have chosen for the antagonist to wear a patient gown as it links to her past (mental asylum) and shows she is mentally unstable which is the effect and look we want to create for the audience. The use of the colour white allows the audience become deceived as the colour white suggests purity which contradicts the character.
 
 
Ideas for the contact lenses:
 
                                                   
 
One of our ideas for the antagonist contact lenses is the use of using no pupil contact lenses which links within the idea of the supernatural and the fact that her pupil has rolled to the back of her head, inferring she is mental and abnormal.
This conforms to the stereotype of her being scary mentally unstable and its creates a sense of mystery as you won't be able to read the antagonist which shall create more  suspense towards the audience.
 
 
 
Another idea and option we had for the contact lenses is pure white which shows the pupil. This creates the effect of purity and innocents.  By 'Martha' wearing white contact lenses links to the innocents we want the audience to see from her as it creates the conventions of a horror genre antagonist.

For the costumes and clothing for the character of the four teenagers they are going to be wearing normal standard casual clothes. By not having the characters wear clothes which aren't seen as the norm for teenagers which won't give the audience a snese of reality from the film which is the reason we have chosen the teens to be dressed using their items of clothing. 

 
 
 
 
 

Planning: Representations of characters.

-How are we representing our characters within our film?

 Antagonist - Bryony
For our antagonist we have a girl which has run away from a mental asylum and is very unstable, this gives an effect that shes going to be possessed and disturbed which creates the awareness that she is going to commit horrible crimes.  This conveys to the audience  who those victims are, as they will be portrayed very differently from the antagonist. It allows the audience to feel as though they too are the victims, as they know the antagonists background. This makes the audience feel more engaged towards our trailer. Overall, we are representing our antagonist as a possessed mentally unstable girl.

The teenagers: Emma, Shanie, Jordan and Sam. 

Our trailer consist  of teenagers which are going to be represented as the stereotypical annoying teenagers which are very common within horror films. The typical conventions of teenagers in a similar genre they are portrayed as arrogant obnoxious and ignorant, this will make the audience want the victims to die therefore gaining more satisfaction out of the film which leads them to be more engaged within our trailer.

Planning: Shot List

Planning: Film Brief and Character Analysis

Planning: Setting and Location for our trailer


 For our trailer we chose an isolated looking cottage, based in the countryside as the setting. To match typical conventions of a horror genre trailer we tried to make sure we chose an eerie and mysterious location. The deserted looking fields help create the horrifying feel. The typically abandoned house insinuates to the audience that bad things will start happening, in our trailer the house belongs to a girl which was sent to a mental asylum for committing a horrific crime.




The swing links with children, and children are commonly used within horror genre trailers. This swing therefore suggests to the audience that our trailer is going to consist of a young child.


- These are the fields that surrounds the house creating the feel of isolation, making our location conventional to our chosen genre.


- The use of using an old looking cottage gives the horror effect more suspense as it could create the audience to feel as if the house is haunted and links within the story of 'Martha' within our trailer.




The way in which the road leads to the house shows that there are no other houses surrounding it. This will alert the audience and make them question what is going to happen. The audience can expect something bad to happen as it is typically isolated and no one is around to help if needed.
This is a typical convention of a horror genre trailer and will help it become successful in the filming industry as it will populate a fanbase as it is intriguing.













Planning: Location Research

For our location we have decided to base the filming in Oxfordshire.Therfore, our trailer is going to be set at Shanie's dads house which is an isolated cottage in the countryside. It has the typical horror genre convention atmosphere. The house is surrounded by the countryside and has a open field nearby the cottage. We are using a field within our trailer as it adds more of an effect, and makes it clearer for the audience to see how the victims are vuneraable which gives the audience more engagment and involvement within the trailer as they shall have more of an understanding which will create the trailer to be successful within the film industry.
Our chosen location includes the typical conventions of a horror genre film as the vunerable teenage girls end up to be in an isoloated location with a quiet creepy old cottage which gives the audience more suspense and they shall feel a connection within the trailer as our audience is based around the generation of teenagers.

Planning: Influences within production.

The media industry includes ideas which we can use and change slightly for our own film trailer. This will help make our trailer successful.
Our narrative and stroyline has been inspired via films like the 'Scream' franchise, 'The Ring', and 'Friday The 13th'. Revenge based crimes which often end in the isolation and death or a group of teenagers. These films conisist of many scenes which involve fast pace editing and music/ soundtrack that engages the audience and makes the audience jump as the characters fight for their lives. The trailers start with equilbrium then break out into flashing shots of the characters fear and struggle to survive.





We want to include scenes which allow the audience to feel suspence within the darkness which will create the tension within  the audience. Surrounding the characters with darkness which we can see from the image creates an unsure atmoshpher for the audience. The films are often viewed in the dark therfore, will make the audience feel as thouhg they are in trhe same position as the character in the film  engaging the audience to the film, making it more succesful within the filming industry.








From the inspiration we got from other films we included the idea of having an empty house in an isolated setting which makes the characters appear more vunerable and the scenes more intense and exciting.








In many horror films the antagonist tends to creep up behind the victim in a shot. This allows the audience to see what is going to happen, building tension; the tension is also created through the help of music.  This makes the trailer more effective in making the audience feel engaged, allowing our trailer to be more memorable for the audience, therefore successful within  the filming industry.


Planning: Narrative



Equilibrium: Will be shown at the beginning by light, slow paced shots showing happy expressions on the teens faces, accompanied by lighter music connoting equilibrium and peace.
Disruption of the equilibrium: The news report telling the audience that the girl has gone missing, here the happy music ends and darker music signifies that ignorance of the teens.
Recognition of the disruption: Is marked as the teens start to get wary of their surrounding and things start to go wrong.
Attempts to restore: is presents as the group of friends try to get away from the killer and fight her off.
Reinstatement of the equilibrium: is not evident.

Our trailer ideas don’t really fit to Propp’s theory as although we have a clear villain we don’t have a clear hero, donor, helper or princess. It is quite common for horror films to deviate from this theory as it is important for the films to be unpredictable to a certain degree.
